Being a nerd, being kind of away

Thu Nov 17, 2011, 1:06 PM
Uh, just wanted to say that neither me nor The Average God are dead. Simply, right now I'm developing a game (a multiplayer space shooter). It's being hard and tons of fun, thus all my "creative" efforts are focused on that, for now. Because I'm a male, and us typical males can't really focus on more than one thing at a time: only females usually have the multitasking superpower.

But, as soon as I'll have this game in further development, I'll jump back to The Average God, and be more present here. In the meantime, I'm checking all the great stuff you're making, but veeery slooowly. And Jelena keeps me informed (and happy).

Cheers to you all ;)

  • Listening to: Space music and thrusters
  • Reading: A Clash of Kings
  • Watching: Fringe
  • Playing: Age of Chivalry
  • Eating: Fornetti!
  • Drinking: Milk and coffee

Ooooh sounds good! My fiance likes making games too, they're usually pixelated. Is your game going to be pixelated or sort of realistic type stuff?

Can't wait to see the rest of The Average God! When you get back to it ofcourse!

As I mentioned above, here comes the winner for "latest reply ever", sorry :B And actually that game I mentioned here was realistic, but now I scrapped it (too ambitious) and am making a simpler non-realistic one. But I can't wait to finish it! I want to get back to comics and The Average God, sigh.

What does your fiancÚ do? Can I see it? I love pixelated stuff! Are you still here? You didn't post stuff since almost as long as me :P

aaaaand another late reply! what a shame, games take such a lot of effort. I see you still haven't finished The Average God! Ahh well maybe its time to do another comic eh? : (

He's a philosophy student but makes pixel games in his spare time. You could if he would show anyone, he used to be on here ages ago actually. He's making a game about an abandoned city that he's been doing for about 2 years now and he still hasn't finished one flat : D

Ahah my turn for late reply! I noticed yours just now :D I was thinking about The Average God just a couple nights ago, and about the fact that I'd really like to continue it. But I'm still stuck into games (happily, I have to admit, but still). I made various games during this time, and I might finally release one in the next months :P Luckily Jelena keeps my comic craft alive: we made a comic together a while ago, and I'm writing a new short story for her.

Pixel games are usually beautiful, and very philosophical! Hope I'll get to see some of your fiancÚ's ones sooner or later. Abandoned cities are always fascinating :)

It would be a shame to completely abandon it, I guess you gotta think about directions and stuff.Looks like a fun game with a lot of effort put into it, you should definitely release it! I saw that comic! It's brilliant good work you two :D

Haha yes I am trying to convince him to go on deviantart and put up some previews, but he gets weird about showing things unless they're completely finished!

Oh I won't completely abandon it! I abandoned tons of comics in my life, but The Average God is the only one that stuck to my mind, and I really want to finish it sooner or later. It's just in a very long hold :P
Eheh glad you like our comic ^_^ Now I'm writing Jelena another one, since she was complaining that everyone writes her serious stuff. So we want to make a silly comic :D

Oh convince your man! I am getting more curious with each message. But most of all, convince him to finish stuff! So he could also post it on IndieDB (a big place for indie games)

I'm looking forward to new pages! :D Don't make the hold too long :P

wow that sounds great I'd love to see how she draws less serious things!

I will tell him about that! Doubt he's going to finish it soon, he's obsessive about details. Right now he's making a whole abandoned soviet city that can be explored but he's not finished the first block of flats yet :D

I'm still here. I'm not very quick with the replies either. Summer is over so it's time to start drawing again (if I remember how.)

Space shooter as in "Galaga" or some of those old classics? :D In any case a game sounds like a very cool project to work on, Daniele (looking forward to the return of The Average God when you have to time to work on new pages). ;)

Oh! Galaga!!! :D Actually it's getting more and more realistic the more we go on, while I wanted it quite arcade, but who knows what will come up in the end - as of now, my eyes are rolling with physics :D And thanks for the Average God support Diego, I feel so nerdish now that I'm stuck with computer programming that I hope I won't get back to it in spring :nerd:

We were too busy fuc... uh, I mean, working :D Aha, sorry, it's me that go totally nerdy when I develop stuff with the computer, because I need less rest than while drawing, and thus spend all my time there and then don't want to see a computer for the rest of the day :B

Phew! Was getting worried. Look forward to more Average God! Good luck on the game! We're in the middle of our first one it's been a learning experience....oye has it been. Is it an iOs game or platform, PC?

Hey Rob :) It'll be a Windows maybe Mac desktop game. We're only two persons for now (my friend Paul does 3D, while I do the coding and the 2D/UI stuff), so it won't be a huge game, but will hopefully be fun. I'm doing it with Unity (which I love and hate), after many years of developing interactive stuff with Flash. What are you using?

HA! We are also using Unity! What is it you hate about it?
We were having problems with the programmers we hired (they were steering us down an ill-advised path) so we got ourselves a cut of Unity and couldn't believe how powerful it was in regards to lighting etc.
Yeah, flash huh? I used to think Flash was the future, now it's almost dead.
Look forward to seeing some game stuff!

HA! Unity!!!
I love: it's sheer power (considering its cost), that coding in C# is more fun than ActionScript (sometimes), and that it's really easy to build plugins that you (or the graphics) can use while working in the Editor to set everything up (this is definitely an awesome thing: I usually built plugins even for Flash, when there were a lot of graphics working on a project, but it was a pain in the ass - while in Unity it's so quick).
I hate (mostly as a programmer): that they "forgot" to include packages in the classes (so that two classes with the same name in different folders overwrite each other - ugh!), the lack of documentation, the many bugs, the GUI system, and that there is no decent tweening engine (even iTween really sucks and is way buggy, compared to AS's Tweener or TweenMax/Lite/etc).

And hey! I still think that Flash is great. For 2D (or 2.5D) graphics for touchscreens (which is my main job) there's still nothing as powerful. Last year I made many touchscreen apps who ran on a dual monitor system, with both monitors at 1920x1080px and a lot of interactivity, and they ran wonderfully. Though it's bad that Adobe is moving to the dark side.

Ah! I said I'm a nerd! Look: I got verbose :D

You're alive! GOOD!

Game development = whoa. I was under the impression that there was a Great Game Mother somewhere in the bowels of the earth that hatched them fully developed. So much for my happy delusions...

But yeah, multitasking? HA. I can only focus on one thing per decade. Possibly per lifetime. Let's not start taking bets about what that one thing is, either--I' trying to avoid being institutionalized.

Yey! Now that you mention it, I might start looking for that Great Game Mother: way easier than what I'm into now (physics physics physics and more physics - augh!).

I personally can focus on one thing per 2/3 months, than I gotta rest and change... I suppose that's why this game came out while I was Average Godding =P

I have so much respect for physics people. When I was a kid I wanted to be an astrophysicist...then I realized that it was going to require a lot of math...and so I became an English major, and settled in for a lifetime of regret and self-loathing. Well, maybe not that bad, but I still wish I could understand anything about calculus.

Thanks Kos :) It's being fun, and as of now my hands are too frozen to draw (I just got back to Italy, and in my apartment it's way colder than in Jelena's). The bad thing about developing a game is that I don't need pauses, on the contrary than when I draw, thus I'm nerd at an excess and go way autistic (Jelena apart) :B
